2 Though he finished his studies in Strassbourg in 1885, with a habilitation thesis entitled Grundzüge einer Theorie der mathematischen and nicht-mathematischen Grenzbegriffe, he often visited relatives in Vienna, where he also attended lectures, including at least one by Brentano (Philosophy of Aristotle, WS 1877/78), with whom he also corresponded on a regular basis. In 1888 he decided to publish a book which was to encompass both the results of his habilitation thesis and further developments in his investigations.
